The NVR is pleased to invite you to a company visit to SRON, the Dutch Institute for Space Research, on Thursday, June 6. This company focuses on astrophysics, Earth observation and exoplanet research. The institute is also developing new sensitive sensors for X-ray and infrared radiation to serve as a satellite instrument.
During the company visit, presentations will be given on Earth observation and astrophysics, and a tour will be given.
Earth observation: SRON builds space instruments for satellites that fly around the Earth in a polar orbit around noon/midnight. As the Earth rotates beneath them, they scan the entire Earth’s atmosphere. For example, SRON researchers analyze the reflected sunlight that always falls at the same angle. This gives them information about methane plumes (Sentinel-5p), aerosols (PACE) and soon also CO2 (TANGO).
Astrophysics: SRON builds instruments for space telescopes that study the universe in the X-ray and far-infrared, such as XRISM and GUSTO. SRON astronomers use X-rays to investigate hot gas structures such as the Intracluster Medium and the environment of black holes. They use far-infrared light to look straight through the gas and dust clouds that form the nurseries of stars and planets. For the distant future, SRON is helping to build LISA, which offers a completely new window on the universe in the form of gravitational waves.
Members of the NVR have the unique opportunity to attend presentations about SRON and a tour. During the visit, coffee/tea will be served at the start, and afterwards there will be an opportunity to chat/network with those present.
Program
The presentations will be given in Dutch and English.
