Omschrijving

On Wednesday, April 6, 2022, a lecture will be organized by the National Space Museum (NRM) together with the Dutch Space Travel Association (NVR).

It was already known that space for Defense can play an important role, certainly in the future. After all, satellite communication and image material from satellites have been used for a long time. The satellites used for this, however, were always from friendly nations or commercial parties. The Dutch Defense itself was not yet active in the space domain. This changed on June 30, 2021.

Virgin Orbit’s Cosmic Girl lifted off from Mojave Air and Space Port to launch BRIK-II, the very first Dutch Defense satellite. The launch was successful and the entry of Defense into the space domain was a fact. The BRIK-II satellite has been under development since November 2017 and consists of a complex set of three innovative sensors, largely developed by Dutch parties. In this lecture I would like to take you through the story of this development, where we discuss the purpose, design, launch and the results achieved so far of the BRIK-II satellite.

Presentor:

Captain Dennis Wevers has been project manager BRIK-II at Defense Space Security Center (DSSC) since 2018. In that role he was responsible for the daily management of the BRIK-II project in the design, development and testing phase. After the launch, he also became the satellite’s primary operator and directs the (small) team of operators that operates the satellite on a daily basis.
